Frequently asked questions
We specialize in servicing Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, Fazua, and GoCycle e-bike systems. Our expertise ensures your e-bike stays in top condition.
I was selling, and servicing, Bosch powered e-bikes from Raleigh as early as 2017. Bosch electric systems are typically found on bikes from Trek, Cannondale, Scott, Cube, Focus, Orbea, Raleigh, Haibike, Santa Cruz & Pivot. We can provide professional servicing and diagnostics to all these brands.
I began servicing Yamaha e-bike systems in 2020, when Cycle Tech started as a Haibike dealer. Yamaha electric systems feature mainly on Haibike, with a few Lapierre models. We can provide professional servicing, diagnostics and spares for all Yamaha systems on these bike brands.
I started servicing Shimano Steps motor systems as a Merida dealer in 2018. Merida bikes exclusively used Shimano motors in those early years of e-bike development. These days Shimano Steps systems feature on bikes from Commencal, Canyon, Trek, Yeti, Norco, Scott & Canta Cruz. We can provide professional servicing, diagnostics & spares for the Shimano Steps system on all these bikes.

Yes, but the cost for labour is the responsibility of the retailer. I'm able to support warranty claims for Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha and Go Cycle electric systems. Usually the manufacturer will provide the parts free of charge, but my time will need to be paid for by you. In order to successfully make a warranty claim you will need to provide an adequate proof of purchase. Not all manufacturers will entertain claims if you did not buy the bike from new yourself.
Yes, if it is from one of my supported brands I can test it. At the time of writing only the Bosch system provides a detailed report, but the others will highlight significant issues.
I see an uptick in e-bike battery enquiries after periods of cold weather. If the battery is stored in a shed, or garage, and subjected to low temperatures it will deliver significantly less range. This will return to normal as the weather improves.
Conversely, a battery that is left somewhere very hot, like the back of a car, or in a conservatory, during hot sunny weather, can shut itself down (thermal lock). This is to prevent the risk of fire, but will take some time to reset, which could spoil your riding plans.
To keep your e-bike running safely and efficiently, you should generally schedule a professional service every 6 to 12 months, or every 1,000 to 2,000 kilometres (~620 to 1,240 miles).
Because e-bikes are heavier and produce more torque than standard bicycles, their components—especially chains and brake pads—wear down faster.
Service Intervals by Rider Type
Casual Riders (weekends/short trips): A full service once a year or every 12–18 months is typically sufficient.
Frequent Commuters (daily use): Plan for a basic tune-up every 3 to 4 months or every 1,000 miles.
Mountain/Cargo Bikers: Heavy loads and muddy terrain accelerate wear; these bikes often need professional checks every 3 to 6 months.
Manufacturer Recommendations
The "Break-in" Service: Many manufacturers recommend an initial check-up one month (or ~200–500km) after purchase to adjust cables and bolts that settle during early use.
Software Updates: Leading systems like Bosch may display service reminders on the screen and require periodic firmware updates to optimise motor performance and battery health.
At-Home Maintenance Checklist
Regular home care can extend the time between professional services:
Weekly: Check tyre pressure, clean drivetrain parts, and apply e-bike specific chain lube.
Monthly: Inspect brake pads for wear and check for any loose bolts or "M-check" safety points.
Every 3 Months: If storing the bike, ensure the battery remains between 30% and 60% charge; never store it at 0% or 100% for long periods. And don't leave it anywhere that it's exposed to low temperatures (below 4°F), or high temperatures (ABOVE 100℉).
